The Lido is the only island in the Venetian lagoon where private cars are permitted — a concession earned because it is eleven kilometres of natural sandbar rather than driven pilings. That geography made it the city's shield for a thousand years.
The Republic reinforced the seaward edge between 1744 and 1782 with the murazzi, Istrian stone walls set against the Adriatic and among the last great public works the Serenissima completed.
