Chioggia sits at the southern rim of the Venetian Lagoon, roughly 25 kilometres from Piazza San Marco, and in 1379 it very nearly ended Venice. Genoese forces took the town; Venice blockaded the inlet and starved them out by June 1380.

Access has narrowed the distance rather than the geography.
